While working in the pediatric ICU, I cared for a 6 month old baby girl that was dying of meningitis and the family was removing her from all "life support" and the ventilator allowing her to breath.Their only request was to have her baptised before she died. The hospital staff was happy to arrange this with the family and their pastor, and minutes before the family arrived for her private ceremony, I was given a little pink dress and pink flowered headband to dress this baby girl in for the service.
Frantically, I worked around all the lines, tubes, and monitoring equipment connected to this baby girl in order to make her look beautiful and presentable for her family
and this heartfelt service occuring in the moments ahead. As their private service was happening and she was being baptised, I felt an inner peace not only for her but myself, and realized that her short stay on this Earth had brought so many people together...All things happen for a reason...
