I once cared for of a teenage boy with cerebral palsy that could only communicate with his eyes. "Up and Down" meant Yes! And "Side to Side" meant No! He had been found lying on the floor in his own urine and bugs crawling all over him from neglect and he was ill and in the ICU with me for 12 hours. I had social services involved in the investigation, and for my whole shift with him, I did my best to communicate with him and provide him the best care I could give. At the end of that day, I knew in my heart that he was genuinely pleased that someone actually took the time to care for him...
